How Is Your Take-Home Pay
Actually Calculated?
Your take-home pay is what's left after every withholding comes out of your gross. The order matters: pre-tax deductions like a traditional 401(k) or HSA lower your taxable wages first, then federal income tax, state income tax, and FICA (Social Security and Medicare) are applied, and finally post-tax items like Roth contributions or garnishments are subtracted.
Your state changes the math more than most people expect — nine states have no income tax at all, while others layer on named programs like California SDI, New York PFL, or New Jersey FLI that never show up in a generic calculator. Filing status and W-4 settings shift your federal withholding, Social Security stops at the annual wage base, and Medicare adds a surtax above a threshold.
A calculator that respects
the edge cases.
Hourly or salaried, single job or job-hopping, US or anywhere — Stub44 surfaces every input through a real UI. No hidden defaults, no rounded corners on your math.
Progressive Federal Brackets
Single, married filing jointly or separately, head of household, qualifying widow(er) — your filing status drives the right bracket curve, every bracket.
All 50 States + DC
State withholding tables plus the named state-specials most calculators skip: CA SDI, NY PFL, NJ FLI, HI TDI, PA LST, WA Cares, and more.
Wage-Base-Aware FICA
Social Security caps at the annual wage base; Medicare adds the 0.9% surtax above the threshold. Paste YTD earnings for accurate mid-year math.
Full W-4 Support
Post-2020 Step 2(c) two-jobs, Step 3 credits, and Step 4(c) extra withholding — or the legacy allowances form. State allowances are independent.
Every Deduction
401(k), Roth 401(k), 403(b)/457(b), SIMPLE IRA, HSA/FSA, dependent-care FSA, child support, IRS levies, and creditor garnishments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Stub44 free?
Yes — you can model a full paycheck and switch pay periods without paying or creating an account. An optional Premium subscription unlocks unlimited saved profiles and 21 extra themes, but the core calculator is free.
Where does my pay data live?
On your device. Nowhere else. Every calculation runs on-device — your income, deductions, and results are never transmitted to our servers or anyone else.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The calculation engine runs entirely on your phone, so you can model paychecks with no connection. Internet is only used for analytics, crash reporting, and subscription validation.
Which states are covered?
All 50 states plus the District of Columbia — every state’s withholding tables, with state-specials like CA SDI, NY PFL, and NJ FLI itemized by name. No "coming soon" footnotes.
Can I compare two job offers?
Yes. Duplicate a profile, change the state or pay rate, and Stub44 shows the net-pay delta so you can tell whether an offer is actually a raise — in two taps.
Can I use it outside the US?
Yes. Flat-percentage mode lets you set a single deduction rate per profile and still model income, pay period, overtime, and additional income.
